I had played RPG’s a lot before I went to university but the first person who really understood how to run a game was a friend called Chris Wilton. GMs before had basically followed instructions in the scenario, Chris told a story. I played a very simple game of Cthulhu with him where my character was sneaking up on a madman intent on summoning monsters on a bleak hilltop. He built the suspense up and I was gripped, I felt like I was in the boots of my intrepid adventurer as he stalked up the hill, hiding from the lunatics’ ceremony. My gaming has moved on a lot since then.
